About Andrew

Andrew (he/him/el) identifies as a Thai Mexican graduate student who resides in Alhambra, California. From a young age, his parents instilled in him the value of education and the importance of going to college. He still remembers the first time stepping on a college campus for a tour and feeling a sense of belonging. Andrew is a huge foodie and enjoys traveling to different cities and trying new foods.
 In his free time, Andrew enjoys working out, playing soccer and basketball with friends, listening to Reggaetón and Hip Hop, and watching comedy shows on Netflix.

Introduction to Student Affairs

Andrew earned his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from California State University, Fullerton. As an undergraduate student, Andrew first served as an Orientation Leader where he enjoyed welcoming new students into the university and sharing his knowledge of campus. Andrew became a Titan Ambassador, where he gave tours throughout the academic year. During his junior year, Andrew served as Summer RA, where he had his first experience working in Housing. During his fourth year, Andrew got an opportunity to become a Resident Advisor and enjoyed hosting programs and building community in the on-campus apartments. As the Senior Resident Advisor for the Global Engagement floor, overseeing international students, Andrew was part of the Housing and Residential Engagement Team that received the Collaborative Program of the Year Award in 2020. He served as Alumni Liaison and MESA Ambassador for Hermanos Unidos. Andrew was also a part of the Allied Health Academy and the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP). Through these experiences, Andrew realized how awesome it was to work with students and be an integral part of their growth. 

Graduate School Experiences

Andrew earned his M.A. in Post-Secondary Educational Leadership with a concentration in Student Affairs from San Diego State University. Andrew also served as a Graduate Assistant for the Native Resource Center, where he oversees a team of student program assistants. Some of Andrew’s programs have included a resume workshop and hosting a Native Athletes Panel. As a teaching assistant for the Leadership Minor, Andrew facilitated weekly presentations from True Colors to Conflict Style.

As a graduate member of NASPA, Andrew has presented at the 2020 virtual Western Regional Conference and Southern California Careers in Student Affairs Day 2021. Andrew will be serving as the NUFP IPKC (Indigenous Peoples Knowledge Community) Representative from 2021-2022.

Research Interests:

After graduate school, Andrew will work to attain a doctorate degree. His research interests include exploring mental health in men of color and machismo/masculinity in college. Andrew hopes to increase the retention and graduation of men of color.
