About Marissa

Marissa (she/her/hers) is a first-year PELSA student at San Diego State University (SDSU). She identifies as a first-generation college student from the Inland Empire, California. While pursuing her Master’s degree, Marissa works full-time as a Student Services Professional at SDSU. She is passionate about breaking the stigma surrounding higher education for minority students and making access to and success within university education achievable for all. In her free time, Marissa enjoys running, reading, and graphic design.

Higher Education Journey

Marissa earned her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology with an emphasis in Law and Society and a minor in Ethnic Studies from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD).

​During her time at UCSD, she participated in the Summer Bridge Program, where she realized the need for additional resources to support first-generation college students. Her journey into education began at the French and Spanish immersion school, where she discovered her passion for working with students. This experience inspired her to transition into academia, leading her to join the Office of Student Support team at SDSU two years ago.

Research Interests

Marissa’s professional experience at SDSU, along with her volunteer work at the Women’s Resource Center, informs her research interests.

She is dedicated to fostering inclusive and supportive environments for first-generation and minority students. Her research focuses on breaking down barriers to higher education and advocating for equitable resources and support systems within academic institutions.
